In an effort to reduce hypertension and the number of strokes, there is a revitalized crusade to cut back on sodium.

In an effort to reduce hypertension and the number of strokes, there is a revitalized crusade to cut back on sodium.

Americans eat more sodium than they need. We eat an average of 3400 milligrams of sodium per day, which is the equivalent of about one and one half teaspoons of salt.

The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, which has input into the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, is calling for slashing the current recommendation from 2300 milligrams of sodium to 1500 milligrams daily.

This will be a challenge that we cannot tackle individually.

The problem of excessive sodium intake can- not be solved by simply removing the salt shaker from the stovetop or the table. Sodium has become so pervasive in our food supply. It is estimated that 77% of dietary sodium comes from processed foods and restaurant meals. Voluntary efforts to reduce sodium in the food supply have previously failed. Driven by recent research, policy makers are pushing for broad new restrictions on the amount of sodium in restaurant and packaged foods.

So, in the meantime, choose foods that are already low in sodium such as fresh, frozen and canned fruits along with fresh vegetables and frozen ones without sauces. Fresh meat, fresh poultry, and fresh fish are also low in sodium along with their freshly frozen counterparts which have not been marinated or injected with preservatives or salty seasonings. Select herbs and spices to enhance taste, but avoid salty seasoning mixes. Read labels to investigate the sodium content of favorite foods and therefore make smarter choices. Do not wait to wage your own war on sodium!

Food Service Consultants is a company that believes in KIDS. Their people-first approach is what sets them apart from competitors. The company’s leadership has always focused on how to the food service experience is an expression of each school’s vision and mission. The employees are part of our school community and relations are a key to the overall partnership with each school. As an educator I have worked with the company for 25 years and first and foremost, call them friends. As a new school the company is supporting our needs every step of the way. I wish I knew how to say thanks adequately.

A very large part of the high school day is providing our students a nutritious quality lunch. Offering this type of service to our students and faculty can be a large challenge. Food Service Consultants has been an incredible partner at both Lutheran North and South for over two decades. They are experts in this area and run every aspect of our kitchen and food service. The kitchen staff and management are friendly, prompt, and extremely flexible and dependable. I never worry about any aspect of our lunch program – Food Service Consultants gets it done. They provide ease of use for our students and families through a debit card type system for payment and are always helpful in working with our students and faculty. In addition to providing an outstanding lunch program, FSC provides assistance with a number of our special events. They are flexible and always willing to go above and beyond in providing for our needs. FSC is an outstanding partner!

Food Service Consultants has been providing our food service program for the past six years and have been a welcomed addition to our school family and community. The employees and management team have the same caring theme that the children are the heart of our school and all that we do. They offer us a quality food service program at a very cost effective price, which is so important to our families. With Food Service Consultants handling our program, this allows us to concentrate on our main goal of enriching the lives of our children. What I truly appreciate the most is that even though I realize we are one of their smaller schools, they always make us feel like we are just as important as any of their other larger accounts.

There are two main areas in particular that we will be focusing on. The first is that as a company, we are moving to eliminate all Styrofoam products from our foodservice programs. We will be purchasing recyclable paper products instead, and will be encouraging all of our clients to move in that direction where possible. The second area is in regard to single stream recycling and other special recycling programs that are available and could possibly benefit your school or business. We felt that this would be an appropriate time and wanted to do our part as a responsible company. We would like to give a special thank you to the Inter-School Ecological Council, which is comprised of a number of local private all-girl schools, most of which we currently serve. There are also a number of dedicated religious sisters and school staff members that commit their time to help organize the efforts of these young women. Please feel free to contact us for more information.

Over the past many years, I have found Food Service Consultants to be most responsive to our needs, and gracious coworkers in our work of education. The staff has always been courteous and friendly to our students and faculty, the managers have been responsive to our needs and concerns, and the senior leadership of the organization has always been eager to address any issues that we had. And the food is good! During my ten years as Headmaster (1995-2005) I was very pleased to work with Food Service Consultants. They have provided for the needs of both our school and monastery, both on a daily basis and for those special events through Specialized Catering. I heartily recommend them as an excellent food provider.

I have worked with the senior management of Food Service Consultants since Nestle Purina Farms first opened to the public nearly twenty five years ago. Over the years we have grown together with them handling all of our concession and special events. They have always been flexible and willing to do whatever was necessary to meet our needs. We are proud of the fact that we have just recently opened our new Purina Event Center, which is a state-of-the-art indoor facility for dog shows and other special functions. Our new Checkerboard Café, which they helped to design and operate, has received outstanding feedback from our guests and we are excited about the future.
